The Fortuner is the classic South African road-trip car: diesel, high ground clearance, genuine low-range 4x4 and a third row of seats. The X5 and Range Rover Sport trade some rough-road ability for far more refinement on long tar drives; see luxury car hire for the full premium range. The iX is the quiet choice for the Winelands and the coast, with charging covered on our electric car hire page.
For most visitors, no. The Garden Route, Route 62, the West Coast to Paternoster and the Winelands are all on tar. An SUV earns its keep through space, comfort and a higher driving position rather than off-road ability.
A proper 4x4 makes sense when your plans include:
| Route | Distance | Driving time | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cape Town → Hermanus | about 120 km | 1.5 hours | N2 over Sir Lowry's Pass or the coastal R44 via Clarence Drive |
| Cape Town → Paternoster (West Coast) | about 150 km | 1 hr 45 min | R27 coastal road; West Coast National Park on the way |
| Cape Town → Clanwilliam (Cederberg) | about 230 km | 2.5–3 hours | N7; gravel roads beyond town |
| Cape Town → George (Garden Route) | about 430 km | 4.5–5 hours | N2 via Swellendam and Mossel Bay |
| Cape Town → Knysna | about 490 km | 5.5 hours | N2; continue to Plettenberg Bay (about 520 km) |
| Cape Town → Namibian border (Vioolsdrif) | about 680 km | 7 hours | N7; cross-border letter required |
Times are without stops and assume normal traffic. Leave Cape Town before 06:30 or after 09:00 on weekdays to avoid the inbound and outbound N2 queues, and plan fuel stops on the N7 north of Clanwilliam, where towns are further apart. Ending your trip somewhere else? See one-way car hire from Cape Town.
Selected vehicles, including the Fortuner and Hilux, may cross into Namibia, Botswana, Eswatini and Lesotho with our letter of authority. Request it at least 72 hours before your handover. The letter costs R1,500 per rental and includes the vehicle documents the border post will ask for.
SUV hire includes 300 km a day on the Fortuner and X5, pooled across your rental, so on a 10-day trip you have ten days' worth of kilometres to use however you like. That comfortably covers Cape Town to the Garden Route and back with plenty of day trips. Electric SUVs include unlimited kilometres.
With the third row in use, the Fortuner's boot takes soft bags rather than large suitcases. For seven adults with luggage, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class on our people carrier hire page is the better choice. Roof boxes add space but catch Cape Town's south-easter, so drive more slowly on windy days and on exposed stretches such as the N2 near Sir Lowry's Pass.

FAQs
No. The Garden Route along the N2 and the inland Route 62 are tarred, so any car will do. A 4x4 only helps if you plan gravel side-trips such as the Cederberg, game reserves or mountain passes like the Swartberg.
Yes, in selected vehicles such as the Toyota Fortuner and Hilux, with our cross-border letter (R1,500 per rental, 72 hours' notice). Border fees and Namibia's road-user charges are paid by you.
Yes. The Toyota Fortuner has seven seats in three rows. The third row suits children or shorter trips, and boot space is limited when it is in use.
Driving on well-maintained gravel roads is permitted and covered by your chosen waiver, subject to the rental terms. Off-road use in a vehicle that isn't a 4x4 is not covered. Add the Tyre & Glass waiver for stone chips and punctures, which are the most common gravel-road damage.
Our SUVs start from R1,599 a day including VAT. The Fortuner 4x4 is R1,599 a day and the BMW X5 R2,899, with lower per-day rates for 7 days or more.
